Skip Units Ltd have supplied Blackpool Council with a total of 20 waste containers for its innovative BIG CAT (Blackpool Is Getting Clean And Tidy) programme.

The containers are located at the Bristol Avenue Recycling Centre and are used to collect household waste and then transfer it either to landfill or to the new PFI recycling plant at Thornton Cleveleys. Finished in Blackpool Council's bold purple colour and sporting a giant BIG CAT decal, the containers are designed to provide extra publicity for the scheme.

BIG CAT is an initiative launched in April 2008 by the council's Streetscene department to educate neighbourhoods and community organisations to the benefits of recycling and looking after their local environment. The programme is personified in the BIG CAT logo and mascot, which turns up in person to help kick start many initiatives and events, including the town centre deep cleaning operation, tree planting, the Stanley Park Clean up and a Waste  Amnesty.

The BIG CAT scheme also operates within local schools and communities to involve residents in improving their own neighbourhoods. Each Area Forum has been allotted £7500 to spend on BIG CAT issues, such as installing a new alley gate or creating a community garden. So far the BIG CAT campaign has helped walk children to school, cleaned up 'grot spots', installed new planters, helped raise the awareness of dog fouling and other pressing local issues.

Skip Units Ltd has supplied 20 open top waste containers, 16 of 35 cuyd capacity and 4 of 15 cuyd capacity. The containers were designed by Skip Units to provide an unobstructed background for the colourful BIG CAR logo in vinyl to stand out against the council's purple house colour.
